La Brea Tar Pit Adventure

These pictures are from pit 91 at the La Brea Tar Pits. There are lots of bones sticking out of the ground. They only dig for the bones during the summer months. The shiny spots are pools of crude oil that is seeping up from the ground. It surfaces here because of the tectonic plates that are moving in the area. We found out that the researchers won't be digging in pit 91 for about 5 years. A more exciting discovery has been found. While digging to put in the art museum parking garage (near the La Brea museum) a Mammoth skeleton was found. They took the skeleton out of the ground in huge chunks of earth and put it in boxes until they have time to document all of the bones. 

This is a Mammoth skeleton that we saw at the La Brea Tar Pit museum. We saw one of the molars and thought it was huge... but then we realized that the Mammoths only have two teeth! Two HUGE molar teeth.
